Veteran social activist Anna Hazare was presented with the title of 'Mahatma' (Noble Soul) by his followers in Maharashtra's Ahmednagar District.
A local said that Hazare was the recipient of an honorary doctorate degree, Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan (civilian honours of India) and now he deserves the title of 'mahatma'.
"Anna Hazare has been awarded a doctorate, he has been given the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan, but we have decided to present him with the title of 'Mahatma' (Noble Soul). People in his hometown, Ralegan Siddhi have also decided to address him as 'Mahatma'. He is now Mahatma Anna Hazare," said a local.
Hazare has been spearheading an anti-corruption campaign in the country that has won him support from Indians across the globe.
He had staged an indefinite hunger strike against graft that he gave up on the 13th day when the central government agreed to deliberate the issues raised by him and his forum vis-a-vis the passage and enactment of the Lokpal Bill, a suggestion that has received unprecedented nationwide backing.
The Lokpal Bill or the anti-graft legislation that Hazare is agitating for is seen as a weapon to root out corruption and nepotism from the government machinery and in public life.
The proposed Bill envisages the setting up of a national anti-corruption watchdog to check financial mismanagement and corrupt practices that have deeply pervaded several democratic and civic institutions of India.
