Best Hot Dog in the World

There's every chance that the best hot dog in the world is in Iceland.
It's called a pylsur.
Here are the vital details. It tastes properly of meat, not an indistinguishable blur of brown. The sausage snaps when you bite it. It comes with not one, but two types of onions (fried and raw). And as for condiments, in a pylsur there are none less than three.

The best example of it is found in Reykjavik at Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur.

It's a name that translates as 'Town's Best'. Bæjarins Beztu has been serving these hot dogs for more than 60 years.

It's an unassuming red and white caravan near the harbour within flinging distance of the flea market. At most times of day you will be a line.

Later in the evening when people are pouring out of the nearby pubs and clubs, that line becomes a serious queue.

The first day we visit there's a Mercedes haphazardly pulled up next to the stand. The driver is quickly scoffing a dripping dog and leaning over, trying not to get any of the red, brown or white sauce on her cream coat.

Next to the stand there's just one worn wooden picnic table where you can sit. It's got vertical slats purpose built into the surface so you to park a dog, just in case you want to forward cue a second helping.

NB you might not think you need two, but there's every chance after your first bite you'll be going back for more.

Ordering is a simple process. You point, nod and then hand over 280 ISK. Or you can ask for "eina með öllu" ("one with everything").

What you then get is a long white and fluffy bun and a smearing of goodness. The sausages are a combination of pork, beef and lamb (there are more sheep in Iceland than people). These days the sausages are rumoured to be braised in beer.

The meat is sweet, salty and rich. Then there are the sauces. The first is a stripe of ketchup. The second is a special lightly spiced mustard the colour of tree bark. The third is remoulade. It's a mayonnaise that's been punched up with gherkins and capers.

But the real heroes are the onions. Their pairing of a sprinkle of some that have been crunchy fried with the prickle of others that are raw is a stroke of ingenuity.

There are plenty of other things to do in Reykjavik. Swanning about in the Blue Lagoon is tranquillity itself. There are geysers to see and Viking boat sculptures to pose beside. There's great live music and a serious coffee scene.

If you can pair any of those activities with a jaunt past the best hot dog stand in the world, then you've got your day made.

Katie Couric Replacements For 'CBS Evening News'

With news of Katie Couric's departure from the "CBS Evening News" all but official, talk is quickly turning to who will replace her at the anchor desk. The network newscasts may not be the titans they once were, but they're still the most-watched news programs around, and anybody who gets the gig will be occupying a very prestigious position. Below, see some of the hotly—and not so hotly, and purely speculatively—tipped picks for potential Couric replacements. Be sure to tell us whether you think these people could actually take Couric's spot, or whether hell will freeze over before that happens.

The CBS anchor chair would mark a return for Roberts. He was the network's White House correspondent and was considered a leading contender to replace Dan Rather--until, that is, Couric stepped in.

Masters 2011: Can Lee Westwood Snag First Major

When Englishman Lee Westwood overtook Tiger Woods atop the PGA Tour world rankings in October of last year, he made history.

Not because of what he had accomplished; rather, it was what Westwood hadn't done that made him so notable, namely: winning a Major title.

Westwood eventually lost the number one distinction earlier this year, but his winless streak in Major tournaments remains intact heading into the 2011 Masters Tournament.

The majors have long been a source of head and heartache for the 37-year-old Westwood, as he's come tantalizingly close to winning each of the four tournaments over the years.

Prior to last season, Westwood's best finishes in the majors were sixth at Augusta and third at the U.S. Open, Open Championship and PGA Championship. Last year, though, he came even closer, finishing second at The Masters and the Open Championship.

Now, he enters this year's first major as one of the favorites to win, but can he actually pull it off?

Westy hasn't played poorly through the first three months of 2011, but he hasn't exactly lit the world on fire, either. His decidedly mediocre play is a concern, although it could be chalked up to early season doldrums.

Plus, he showed us he could compete at Augusta last year, playing exceptionally well down the stretch and battling eventual champ Phil Mickelson shot-for-shot.

In the end, Westwood figures to be in contention come Sunday, and as long as he keeps things close, the 37-year-old has a fantastic chance to bring home his first ever major title, making him the first English Masters champion since Nick Faldo in 1996.

Japan Nuclear Leak: Radioactive Water Continues Pouring Into The Sea

Engineers pinned their hopes on chemicals, sawdust and shredded newspaper to stop highly radioactive water pouring into the ocean from Japan’s tsunami-ravaged nuclear plant Sunday as officials said it will take several months to bring the crisis under control, the first time they have provided a timetable.

Concrete already failed to stop the tainted water spewing from a crack in a maintenance pit, and the new mixture did not appear to be working either, but engineers said they were not abandoning it.
Experts estimate that about 7 tons an hour of radioactive water is escaping the pit. Safety officials have said that the water, which appears to be coming from the damaged No. 2 reactor at Fukushima Daiichi, contains one million Becquerels per liter of iodine 131, or about 10,000 times levels normally found in water at a nuclear facility.
The Fukushima Da-ichi plant has been leaking radioactivity since the March 11 tsunami carved a path of destruction along Japan’s northeastern coast, killing as many as 25,000 people and knocking out key cooling systems that kept it from overheating. People living within 12 miles (20 kilometers) of the plant have been forced to abandon their homes.
The government said Sunday it will be several months before the radiation stops and permanent cooling systems are restored. Even after that happens, there will be years of work ahead to clean up the area around the complex and figure out what to do with it.
“It would take a few months until we finally get things under control and have a better idea about the future,” said Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency spokesman Hidehiko Nishiyama. “We’ll face a crucial turning point within the next few months, but that is not the end.”
His agency said the timetable is based on the first step, pumping radioactive water into tanks, being completed quickly and the second, restoring cooling systems, being done within a matter of weeks or months.
Every day brings some new problem at the plant, where workers have often been forced to retreat from repair efforts because of high radiation levels. On Sunday, plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. announced it had found the bodies of two workers missing since the tsunami.
Radiation, debris and explosions kept workers from finding them until Wednesday, and then the announcement was delayed several days out of respect for their families.
TEPCO officials said they believed the workers ran down to a basement to check equipment after the magnitude-9.0 earthquake that preceded the tsunami. They were there when the massive wave swept over the plant.
“It pains us to have lost these two young workers who were trying to protect the power plant amid the earthquake and tsunami,” TEPCO Chairman Tsunehisa Katsumata said in a statement.
On Saturday, workers discovered an 8-inch (20-centimeter) crack in a maintenance pit at the plant and said they believe water from it may be the source of some of the high levels of radioactive iodine that have been found in the ocean for more than a week.
This is the first time they have found radioactive water leaking directly into the sea. A picture released by TEPCO shows water shooting some distance away from a wall and splashing into the ocean, though the amount is not clear. No other cracks have been found.
The radioactive water dissipates quickly in the ocean but could be dangerous to workers at the plant.
Engineers tried to seal the crack with concrete Saturday, but that effort failed.
So on Sunday they went farther up the system and injected sawdust, three garbage bags of shredded newspaper and a polymer – similar to one used to absorb liquid in diapers – that can expand to 50 times its normal size when combined with water.
The polymer mix in the passageway leading to the pit had not stopped the leak by Sunday night, but it also had not leaked out of the crack along with the water, so engineers were stirring it in an attempt to get it to expand. They expected to know by Monday morning if it would work.
Meanwhile, tens of thousands of people are still living in shelters, 200,000 households do not have water, and 170,000 do not have electricity.
Running water was just restored in the port city of Kesennuma on Saturday, and residents lined up Sunday to see a dentist who had flown in from the country’s far north to offer his services. Many were elderly and complaining of problems with their dentures.
Overhead and throughout the coastal region, helicopters and planes roared by as U.S. and Japanese forces finished their all-out search for bodies.
The effort, which ended Sunday, is probably the final hope for retrieving the dead, though limited operations may continue. It has turned up nearly 50 bodies in the past two days.

‘Green Lantern’ Trailer, Poster: Ryan Reynolds Stars As Hal Jordan

Filed in Breaking News , Hollywood News 0 comments

Ryan Reynolds is coming to save the summer.
The actor stars in the blockbuster film adaptation of a beloved DC comic book, taking on the role of Hal Jordan in “The Green Lantern.” Produced by Warner Bros., the film is a CGI-filled epic that puts Reynolds at the center of both earth-bound and space-focused story lines.
Reynolds and Warner Bros. presented a new poster and, more importantly, an extended trailer for the film at the movie convention WonderCon over the weekend. It was shown to great applause, a relief to producers who saw their initial, unpolished trailer panned in November.
Reynolds gave a panel talk about his take on the film.

“Oh, it’s huge,” he said of the extended clip going over well with the audience. “I mean, I’m also a fan. I want it to be good just primarily from that level. It’s a huge weight. It buoys you in a really big way. It’s a totally different experience, seeing it with an audience that it’s designed for. Seeing it with that group of people out there was just electrifying. If it had gone the other way, it would have been a huge disaster. So it’s really great to see that they’re getting it right.”

Jordan, in Green Lantern history, is actually the second person to wear the power-giving ring; when DC comics reintroduced the character in the 1950′s, Jordan was given the ring by the Guardians of the Universe and soon became a runaway hit for the comic book label. Along with Superman and Batman, he helped found the Justice League of America, a convenient plot point for Warner Brothers as they look toward making a film version of that gigantic team of heroes.
And, of course, as is Hollywood’s tradition, the producer of the film says they’re already working on the script for a sequel.

Elizabeth Hurley Files for Divorce

Elizabeth Hurley filed for divorce from Arun Nayar, her husband of four years, on Friday.
In papers filed in London’s High Court, the Estee Lauder spokesmodel reportedly blamed Nayar’s “unreasonable behavior” for the split, though it was Hurley’s own behavior that grabbed headlines in December, when photos emerged of her kissing Australian cricket star Shane Warne outside a London restaurant.

At the time, the model-actress took to Twitter to explain: “For the record, my husband Arun and I separated a few months ago. Our close friends & family were aware of this.”
Warne, with whom Hurley, 45, had been exchanging flirtatious Tweets, issued a similar statement soon after.

Hurley, who was recently in Los Angeles filming a role for the upcoming TV Wonder Woman reboot and is expected to headline several high profile events in New York in the coming weeks, spoke out on Twitter again to dispel rumors she is marrying Warne.
