61-year-old woman arrested for murders' friend'

Police on Wednesday claimed to have cracked the murder case of a 55-year-old woman with the arrest of her neighbourhood "friend", who is a senior citizen.

Latika Kamble was found dead in her residence in suburban Vikhroli last Friday and some valuables were also stolen.

Laxmi Dangade (61) was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly attacking Kamble with a stone at the latter's residence, police said, adding a part of the stolen gold ornaments worth Rs. 56,000 were also recovered from her.

Dangade killed her close friend for money. The accused knew that Kamble's family had jewellery and cash as wedding plans were on at the victim's residence, said Joint Police Commissioner (Crime) Himanshu Roy.

According to police, Kamble, who resided with her son, daughter and nephew, was alone at home on Friday afternoon when Dangade went to her home for chatting.

After sometime, the victim decided to take an afternoon nap, while Dangade stayed on in her house watching TV, Roy said.

"After a while, Dangade hit Kamble on her head with a stone while she was sleeping, resulting in her death. She searched the house and tried to find the keys of the cupboard but in vain. Subsequently, the accused snatched the gold chain and ear-rings of the victim collectively valued at Rs. 56,000 and sneaked out of the house," Roy said.

During the probe, police established that the murder had been committed by a person known to the victim.

After questioning neighbours and relatives, the suspicion fell on Dangade, who confessed to the crime, Roy added.
